Before military cadence became a tradition heard across the armed forces, a Black soldier gave it rhythm.
In 1944, Private Willie Lee Duckworth led his all-Black unit in a call-and-response chant during a grueling 13-mile march. Known as the Duckworth Chant or “Sound Off,” his innovation energized the soldiers and became the foundation of the modern military jody call. U.S. Army Center of Military History
